Return of the Happy Minimum Test

I'm having some trouble settling on a design for my Taronna layout. There are numerous problems. One significant one is figuring out what the minimum radius curve I can use that will not cause a problem for streetcars, and be reminiscent of the older, tighter curves in the TTC streetcar system.

I decided to revisit some tests I did back in 2017, but this time with an eye to making vehicle modifications, if possible, to allow tighter curves to be traversed.

Test results to follow, but until then this little video will give you an idea about what's bouncing around in my mind - I remember this well:

Way Out Layout Runabout, Part 3: The Friendly Ballaster

I seem to have a strange relationship with the Way Out Layout. At one time I thought of it as an honest to goodness layout; a successor to the Lost Ocean Line. These days I view it as a test layout for helping me develop Taronna and the Community Gardens layouts, but I feel compelled to at least sort of finish it to bring it up to the concept I originally had for it. Ok, I admit, it's way more finished than the usual utilitarian test bed. 

Maybe what I'm testing is my resolve to get something more-or-less finished before diving into new projects.

As I've been ballasting away I started to think that maybe the Way Out Layout has a lot in common with The Friendly Giant's old tv layout.

Last year I went with my cousin to visit the PumpHouse Museum in Kingston. Much to my surprise they had the model railway used on The Friendly Giant tv show


It was in pretty good shape. I know, the Way Out Layout doesn't look like it, but they're around the same size, and neither are meant to be serious layouts, just a bit of railway pleasantness. 

Well, after ballasting, some scenic tuneup is in order and then it's on to new layout work once I've been suitably inspired.

Getting started on Taronna's TD 'Tower'

Once the workshop re-org was finished I decided to do what I think is the most difficult job associated with building a version of TD Tower 1 for the Taronna layout: cutting the wall blanks from 1/8" plexiglas sheet.

Again, like cleaning up the workshop, there is nothing bloggable from the activity as it was mostly me practicing cutting plexiglas as my usual 'technique' destroyed many pieces. However, after considerable practice I was able to get the 4 blanks I need for the model building's walls.


I say 'Tower' because my model will be considerably smaller than a properly scaled rendition. In HO, a properly scaled version would be around 2440 mm tall and mine is 495 mm, and not quite as wide as the length of a PCC streetcar; however, when placed amongst the other buildings I plan on having on the Taronna layout, it will seem quite tall. I'm going to write a post on building heights for Taronna to explain my thinking on this, but for now it was important for me to overcome the psychological hurdle of cutting out the wall blanks for the model.

Layout planning tool for layout 585 3 aka Taronna

The advanced layout planning tool has been created!

Now that the Mount Lowe layout is done I've been starting to think more seriously about the Taronna layout. About the only constant that has washed through my mind on this has been that I'd like it to fit on top of the family room coffee table. That little table has been the support for all the small layouts I've built recently - well, other than Mount Lowe - that I've thought of naming an new layout genre after it, MCM-7 :-)

The Taronna layout will likely take up the coffee table's entire surface, and maybe even overhang a little. Since the area of the coffee table is a little under 7 sq. ft., it won't classify as a micro, but that doesn't concern me as the goal is to have a layout representation that reflects my Taronna memories, not to have an 'official' micro version of them.

It's going to be a very tricky layout to design. So far I haven't even come close to capturing the look and feel I'm after by just doing drawings in my sketchbooks. Instead I'm going to try 3D design with actual track and buildings and what-not to see if I can make any progress.

While I had things pulled out for making the layout template I tried having a look at the mockup for the wilderness retreat layout I made last year when I was learning how to use my new rail-bender. That layout is a micro, but I'm not happy with its design either.

Dissatisfaction with layout ideas I've been kicking around awhile seems to be a theme for me as I start the new year. I have a lot of things on the go and will write about a few here, so for some time the blog will be a hodgepodge of notes until something gels. You've been warned :-)

Revisiting the Sharbot House

Back in early 2017 I started work on building an HO scale model of the house I grew up in. I stopped once I had the foundation and floor made. I was getting bad vibes from the build and decided to set it aside for awhile. 

That awhile has lasted all the way to this late date in 2025. I thought if I'm going to build a Taronna layout it isn't going to be complete, or meaningful to me, without my old house somewhere on it.

I needed a different approach than I took with the first model. The plan with that one was to build it in a conventional manner, with walls built around a floor complete with a removable roof to showoff the interior.

While I've been revisiting a number of E. L. Moore posts during my AI investigations I took an interest in Mr. Moore's Clarabel Hotel project. It had a highly detailed interior, and its overall form was based on the fourplex he was living in. It seemed a shame though that its fantastic interior would be blocked from view most of the time.

The hotel has a roof that lifts off so one can look in on the second floor, and the second floor is removable to make the first floor detail visible. It also has an elaborate interior lighting system. I started to think, what if I built the next attempt at my house model completely from the the inside out, and when the interior was finished then decide if I should build an external 'wrapper' to enclose the interior or just leave it open. Leaving it open would be rather unconventional, but it's in the spirit of model buildings that butt up against a layout's edge that leave off the wall that would run along that edge so viewers can look in. I'm not sure how my house model's variation on this idea might turn out, but I'm going to pursue it for awhile.

I didn't reuse the floor from the first attempt. I liked the look of the wood flooring, but I didn't laminate it properly to the styrene substrate and the whole thing ended up warping like crazy.

I couldn't flatten the floor no matter what I tried so I decided not to reuse it. I simply cut all the pieces for the new model's main floor from sheet styrene: 0.060" thick for the floor and 0.040" thick for the walls. It'll be a challenge to paint the walls and floor, or add some sort of floor laminate, but all the pieces are more-or-less square and solid without warps, so at least the structure on this attempt is sound.

Unlike the 1st attempt this model will have a basement. I envision the layout having a below grade level with some sort of subway station modelled, so since I'm already in excavation mode :-) I thought why not try to incorporate the house's basement. It's going to be a challenge, but I'm game - for now :-)

The Brandywine Transit Co. and Me

After writing the post on the genesis of the Mt. Lowe layout, the project that took 10+ years from desire to finished layout, I got to thinking about how long I've been thinking about building a layout inspired by the TTC's streetcar network. So far it's been 50 years! 

From very early on I've been thinking about a TTC layout. Maybe from around '74 or '75, I can't say for certain other than when I saw the May '75 issue of Model Railroader at the local smoke shop newsstand with The Brandywine Transit Co. emblazoned on the cover I thought maybe this was the project to tell me what I wanted to know about building a streetcar layout.

It turned out I was rather disappointed.

So fast-forward 50 years. I went searching for information about The Brandywine Transit Co. online. There was almost nothing, but there were the usual AI findings at the top of the search results. They were rather sketchy though, not to mention pathetic and misleading. I decided to go and look up the BTC articles in my old magazines to properly get an idea of the big picture, and do a little reminiscing. The feel of the paper and the odour from the pages was enough to induce some mild time travelling :-)

I was surprised to find that the series was much longer than I remembered. There were 15 articles altogether from the May '75 issue to May '78. The first 10 dealt with construction of the layout, and the last 5 showed how to build some buildings and rolling stock. Here's the list:

I should also mention that there's a brief biographical note about the series' author, Walter R. Olsen, in the Aug '72 issue. He was an up and coming star at the time. Among other things he had written a popular series on how to build an N scale layout in a coffee table, called the East Glasstop R.R.. It ran in MR from Dec '70 to Apr '71. The biography also contains this rather interesting quote: "I don't care about operation at all. Once a layout is finished I usually run it only for visitors until it is torn up to make way for a new one." I'm more-or-less of the same mind, except for the tearing up part - ok, I have done that, but I like to think it's the exception and not the rule with me :-)

The BTC and series is a master class in how to properly build a traction layout with 1970s model railway technology and methods. I don't think I'd be exaggerating to say it was one of the best layout construction series MR published in the 20th century.

So why was I disappointed? 

In retrospect there was nothing wrong with the series. The problem was with my expectations. In Toronto the streetcar system was and is a fully operating, modern day transit system. The BTC was a somewhat old time system set in 1949 and wasn't urban. As well, it was too advanced and expensive for teenage me. The fit wasn't there.

Once 1977 and 1978 rolled around model railroading was slipping to the back burner. I had other things to do and other interests. These days I have the elements for a TTC inspired layout and some experience. There might be a fit now.

The old bank on Bank houses a new business

The prototype of this old bank model that I started in October and November 2017 and finished in February and March 2019 (!) has a new business in it. 

You may recall that the photos I shot and built the model from were taken in July 2016 when the building was up for sale.

It's so long that I had to do some serious compression on the model so it wouldn't overpower the layout I was building at the time and fit into the overall scene.

In 2017 the building housed a furniture store.

The building is now home to the Sofia Vintage Motor Café. I heard they were having some sort of showcase preview event there last Sunday, so I walked over. I also learned that the concept of the place would be vintage, with a vintage car or two inside while one drinks one's coffee. So, coffee and vintage cars, I couldn't resist.

While I was walking there I noticed an unusual number of Porsche 911s converging in-and-around the area. When I got there I saw why: many, many high-end cars were parked nearby and on display. Obviously the word had gone out; the place was mobbed. There was a line-up to get in and get coffee and hob-nob. I don't have the patience to stand in lines at the best of times so I took a pass and will visit again during a regular weekday. I'm very interested in seeing the interior and sampling the coffee!

That deep side has plenty of room to show off cars!

I'm glad to see the old bank is being used for a new business and I wish them well. 


In the spirit of this new business, if I ever stage another layout car show I'll be sure to include this little old bank.

The Elgin Jazz Club Revisited

A couple last songs before closing.

It's well over 10 years ago the Elgin opened for business. The last set of photos taken there date back 9 years when it was located at the corner of Sinatra and Ocean Blvd on the Lost Ocean Line.


As I've been playing with layout design principle #1 I decided to dust off the Elgin, rearrange the figures, and try taking a photo or two. One of the uses of the Taronna layout will be to stage scenes for photographing so I figured I should try out that aspect while designing it. 


To create the effect of a spotlight on the singer I made a second roof for the Elgin from a sheet of 0.060" thick sheet styrene. I drilled a 1/8" diameter hole in the roof over the spot where the singer stands and set an LED flash light on top. The photos were taken after turning off all the room lights.

That roof isn't permanent. It can be swapped with the original whenever the picture taking mood strikes. Other buildings might get a similar treatment to open up other photographic possibilities.

Experiments

You may have noticed that posts are way down this year. As well as working on the Mt. Lowe layout I've been doing some experimenting, but haven't been posting about it. Ok, well, the Moon Mail Madness diorama was an experiment I eventually posted about, as well as some thoughts I had later on the subject of dioramas and little layouts, but not so much on other layout related stuff.

Sometime in late winter or early spring this year I got interested in building a little loop layout on an A4 sized area, which is rather common in European model railway 'circles'. I wanted to give it a try. In the previous photo, and the following one, you can see my first attempt (it's the layout on the right): a 9mm gauge loop, curved by hand, and Transfer Taped to a thin stack of foam sheets cut to A4 size. I also ballasted the track.

I was also experimenting with layout heights.

Locos run alright around the loop, but the loop itself seemed like I used the outline of a lumpy potato as the guide to bending the track. I assure you I didn't! I first drew a track plan in my Leuchtturm1917 notebook (it's A4 size), pinned a piece of track down, and tried running a loco over the loop to see what would happen. It worked just fine!

But, I didn't like the shape I obtained by just hand bending the track. I figured if I was going to be serious about developing layouts with sinuous track plans I needed to buy a track bending tool, so I bought one of these Rail Rollers.


The YouTube channel Narrow Gauge Shop has a number of videos showing how to use a rail bending tool, and I watched just about all of them. The video above is one particular example that I found quite helpful, but I recommend browsing the channel as it's full of informative and interesting stuff.

Even after my first attempt at track bending with the tool, it produced some quite decent results. As you can see in the photo above, not bad radius conformance, and there appears to be no residual stress in the rails that has to be fought against during installation as there was when I hand bent the track - that's what makes it lumpy.

I was also doing some experimentation with base thickness as I talked about in an earlier post. For this second attempt at an A4 loop I made quite a tall base from foam scraps. At the time I was inspired by the mid-century styling of the Clairtone stereo products and I started to wonder about building a little A4 layout whose base resembled some sort of wood grained piece of audio equipment from the 70s: a pair of wood gain ends with black wood sides, retro-styled control knobs and toggles, and so on.

It could still happen. For now though, I simply painted the sides black because the pink hurts my eyes!

After those tests with N-gauge track I tried my hand at bending some HO-gauge track to fit on an A4 area. I had in mind an E. L. Moore themed display making use of his Yard Blacksmith Shop. It would be some sort of Flyer and Coach repair area with a loop of track for testing rolling stock. That 'wooden' circle is a stand-in for a small turntable which allows repaired rolling stock to return to the mainline. On a 'real' layout I'd have a functional turntable - I think I could somehow squeeze one in.

By this time I was feeling confident in using the rail bending tool and decided to try something a little more adventurous with 9 mm gauge track. In the back of my mind I have a layout idea for a wilderness retreat with a narrow gauge line that connects a house with a wood lot and a dock, with the basic track plan being something of a bent dog bone. 

Although I'm happy with the overall shape, the centre section needs to be a bit longer for what I have in mind. If I go forward and turn this experiment into a layout I'll explain why in a future post.

All this experimenting got me thinking again about the Exploratorium and a post from 2022 on how the principles it promoted for exhibit design could easily be applied to layout design. In their exhibit design pamphlet that I reviewed in that post I took their list of 10 exhibit design principles and substituted 'layout' wherever 'exhibit' appeared to see if the resulting modified list made sense. It did. Looking at it again though it seems to make more sense to substitute 'micro-layout' for 'exhibit', 'fellow modellers' for 'staff', and 'viewers' for 'visitors'. Here's what the new list, a list of micro-layout design principles based on Exploratorium exhibit design principles, looks like:

1. Basic research - just plain tinkering around with something for the fun of it - is an essential part of the micro-layout development process.

2. Micro-layouts are designed and developed by people who are interested in the phenomenon to be displayed.

3. To some extent, all micro-layouts are collaborative: many people make suggestions and contribute ideas.

4. The first stage of micro-layout design is the construction of a full-scale working prototype.

5. Micro-layout builders are responsive to comments from viewers and fellow modellers, testing layouts at many stages in their development and allowing reactions to shape the layout.

6. Micro-layout builders pay attention to aesthetic nuances, noticing what is fun to do, what is beautiful, what is intriguing.

7. Generally, micro-layout builders try not to restrict a viewer’s choice.

8. Ideally, viewers should be able to see the inner workings of a layout and make discoveries about how the layout works.

9. Most micro-layouts are set up on table tops, so that viewers can gather and use the micro-layout together.

10. Micro-layouts are often constructed of inexpensive materials, scrap, and found objects (or junk).

The fit is pretty good. These ideas don't seem too bad for micro-layout planning.

Planning, design, experimentation, are all bouncing around in my mind these days. My 'ultimate' Toronto streetcar layout hasn't escaped their clutches :-) I've been mulling over how to proceed with that layout, the so-called 'Taronna' layout, for quite awhile.

I have in mind a small coffee table sized layout featuring Toronto landmarks that have significance to me, streetcars, a below grade subway station, and a bowling alley! It would be a huge project. I came to my senses recently when I realized it could take 3 or 4 years to build - maybe more knowing me. I want to build something much more doable on say a 2 year time horizon, but still try to incorporate the things most important to me. 


So, in the spirit of tinkering and experimentation I've pulled out the modules I salvaged from the misguided Alta Vista TC layout and have begun playing with them to see what I might come up with design wise for Taronna. I want to see if moving models around on the modules triggers any ideas. I've drawn little sketches of a possible layout, but I'm thinking maybe the full-size 'sketch' approach I took with the Moon Mail Madness diorama is the better way to design it: basically, applying Principle #1 of the Exploratorium guidelines.

Book Talk

On Browsing by Jason Guriel

On Browsing inadvertently captures many of the themes I have in mind for the ‘Taronna’ layout. It’s the first book I’ve read that celebrates and reflects on browsing for books and music in Toronto’s brick-and-mortar stores in the pre-smartphone era. The only difference I guess is that for me browsing is also strongly linked to the physical act of being transported to those stores by bus, subway, streetcar, or my own feet. 

Surprisingly, On Browsing’s author is 19 years younger than me, although his mention of his father’s birth year puts him 5 years older than my father. So, maybe an appreciation of browsing isn’t limited to the very old demographic - although it will be soon enough - but maybe there’s also some influence due to the era one’s parents grew up in as the author seems to illustrate with a number of anecdotes. I didn’t just spontaneously start a book browsing habit, it got started tagging along with my father on his excursions. Maybe there’s some clue hidden in the fact that both fathers were children during The Great Depression that inculcated something. Whatever its cause it was passed on to me.

I guess the only minor discrepancy between the author’s browsing experiences and mine have to do with him growing up in the west end and me in the east. His suburban experiences feature Sherway Gardens and Square One, and mine Scarborough Town Centre and Cedarbrae Mall, although when the scene shifts to downtown, there’s pretty much a one-to-one mapping, especially at The World’s Biggest Bookstore when it comes to book browsing.



TWBB has been gone for over a decade now, and a condo has been built on the holy site, but a few steps down Edward St., closer to Yonge, is BMV, a store that sells used and end-of-line Books, Magazines, and Videos as its acronymic name spells out. I browse there when I’m in Toronto, trying to conjure up those old good feelings I’d get at TWBB. Sometimes I get a tingling, like I did a few weeks ago.




I was eyeing some books on a rack and as I peeked over it I saw a book entitled The Architectural Model on a nearby shelf, way down near the floor, and just as importantly, it was wearing a loud red and white sticker proclaiming it cost only $14.99. Normally I don’t pay much attention to modelling books for architects and the construction industry as they have other reasons for making models, but this book looked quite interesting and I thought it might answer some questions I had about the history of using cardboard to make model buildings. As far as I can tell the first book on making cardboard and paper architectural models for architectural purposes was The Art of Architectural Modelling in Paper written by the architect T. A. Richardson and published by John Weale of London in 1859, so I thought maybe there’d be something here that might help out with some questions I had. Oh, and the price was right :-)


I had high hopes for The Architectural Model, but things got off to a bad start when I read something of slight to model railroaders right in the introduction that put me in a foul mood:


“Indeed, the selection and interpretation of modeling material are fundamental to the entire nature of the architectural model. In certain kinds of modeling, such as that for model railways, reality is miniaturized and pebbles are used to depict stones and so forth. Unlike this naïve realistic approach, architectural models use materials such as wood or cardboard to represent building materials.”


This told me the author doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and his knowledge of model railways is stuck at the level of 1950s children’s play with a setup on a rec-room ping-pong table. Yes, it’s often true that real model railroaders make use of found, natural materials like pebbles, stones, twigs, sand, lichen, and so on, but these materials often yield astonishing results because of the fractalness of the natural world. That is, what we see at a large scale is often also present at much smaller ones; that is, self-similarity is present at a variety of scales. It’s actually a rather sophisticated approach to modelling, making careful use of the self-similarity characteristics of the natural world. If you’re a regular reader here you know I often use natural materials when it seems appropriate, so the author’s comment carries a little extra sting.


Then there’s the statement that implies architects aren’t naïve like model railroaders because architects use modelling materials like wood or cardboard to represent actual building materials and aren’t stuck piddling around with only what nature has to offer. Well, model railroaders represent real building materials with modelling materials too, and have done so since the beginning of the hobby, and before that well into its folk art roots. Model railroaders aren’t naïve children.


Well, I stumbled across those sentences on page 2 (!), so I didn’t get off to a good start :-) My frame-of-mind as I proceeded was: what else has this guy got wrong and what don’t I have the background in to recognize whether it’s true or false? So, my trust in this book was low.


I thought I was having a flashback in BMV when I saw those monster kits sitting on the top of a shelf. That's how the Aurora monster kits were displayed in the Painted Post smoke shop.

I jumped ahead and looked for Richardson’s book in the Bibliography as well as references to passages on using cardboard and paper as model making materials in the index. It turns out Richardson’s book isn’t mentioned anywhere, nor is the early history of using card and paper. There are a number of passages on the use of card and paper models by some famous architects, but nothing that amounts to a coherent history. My questions remain open.


You know, this is how it goes sometimes with browsing in the real world. Sometimes a winner turns up and sometimes not. I’m not getting rid of The Architectural Model. I think it’s one of those books I’ll set aside awhile and then come back to later. It has lots of interesting photos that I’d like to investigate further, and some passages I’ve dipped into at random are intriguing and need more study. Maybe in the summer when the winter has fully worn off I’ll dip in again :-)



Contrary to my Toronto experience, I did have some springtime browsing success in Kingston a few weeks ago in a store called Bookland. I found a copy of The First Spike: The early railways, tramways and roads of eastern Ontario by Steven Manders, published in 2017. It’s a beautiful, well researched book full of interesting pictures and stories. The subtitle summarizes what you’ll find inside fairly well, and I assume the title is a riff on Pierre Berton’s classic book, The Last Spike. For $17, it was a great bargain and should make for interesting summer reading out on the back porch.



Well, when it comes to browsing, I never know what will turn up that I didn’t know I needed, even if some findings chafe a bit. That’s the thrill of the thing.
