The story so far...

A check on element placement as the story develops.

At this stage of construction I'm adding in scenic details I have in mind, and am checking fit, spacing, and composition as I go along. The layout's so small I don't want a surprise near the end where I find I can't fit in things I want without doing some crazy squeezing here and there. 

I should note I haven't finished the electronics on this thing, and that might come back to bite me later (!), but scenery is what I feel like doing right now. This is a life pursuit, not a job, so I do what I like.

New paint scheme for the community garden loco

I was keen to see what the loco I had chosen for the community garden layout looked like in the paint scheme I had in mind. For reference, I started with a green MiniTrains Schöma diesel locomotive.


The fictional story behind the new look is that the loco started life as a diesel, but was later converted to run as a pure EV machine with rechargeable batteries onboard powering an electric motor. Keep in mind that just as our miniature diesel locomotives aren't powered by diesel engines, and our steam locomotives don't burn coal to produce steam, this little loco is as phoney as those others and gets its power from the rails.

Before painting I clipped off the exhaust stack and sanded the body smooth around where it used to be. I wasn't able to pry the chassis out of the body, so I risked it and simply masked off the windows and chassis prior to painting. The body was sprayed with Vallejo Model Air white primer, and then white paint. 

That red and orange plug icon is the old mid-century logo of Ontario Hydro created in 1962 by Allan Fleming, who also designed the classic CN logo. Those icons are decals I made on the computer and printed out. They're a bit rough, but I think they fit into the overall look of the layout.

One day there'll be a roof over the charging station!

Yes, the loco still runs after its close encounter with an airbrush :-) No paint got into areas it shouldn't.

Scenery begins on the Community Garden layout

I've started to work on the scenery by laying out the primary areas. There'll be 9 garden plots, or pieces of garden plots: 5 inside the loop, 3 bounding the outside the loop pedestrian pathway, and 1 close to the loco re-charging station (it's the gravel area with the repurposed porch railing as one of fences that bounds the 9th garden plot).


The shed is tucked in a corner inside the loop. Beside it will be a tree. I've pretty much decided on using the tree in the photo below even though it's maybe 100m or so away from the shed on the real thing (selective compression in action!):


That green patch across from the loco recharging area will be home to this tree:


It isn't actually located in the community garden grounds, but on a boulevard on the walk to it. All I can say is I like it, and it will be an interesting challenge to make, so there you go.


While I was out walking today I noticed the city has marked where they're going to plant new trees. I need some of those sorts of signs for my layouts.

Rolling stock for the Community Garden Layout

A people mover of dubious safety and legality

From time-to-time I've been working on two pieces of rolling stock for the community garden layout: a people mover, and a compost gondola.

I should have taken construction photos, but I wasn't in a documentation frame-of-mind while working on these. The people mover is basically a little flat car built from scraps of styrene, balsa, and wire on a Peco N-guage chassis.

Including a compost car in the 'fleet' was a suggestion from Galen. My instantiation is based on an old Atlas N-scale gondola. Not much has been done to it other than repainting, 'lettering', and installing a custom coupling bar and ring.


Both cars use a ring attached to a long bar for coupling to the locomotive. The long bar is necessary because the curves have such a tight radius: 3-1/2" inches. This prevents the car from jamming or flipping as it is pulled around a curve.

They both need a bit more weathering and colour, but at this stage I wanted to make sure they tracked properly when pulled, and have them around for comparison sizing the other layout elements.

Scenery begins

Track ballasting is not a job I like. However, I figured I had put it off long enough, and once it was done I could get on with other scenic tasks I find more enjoyable. 


Since the pedestrian pathway is also gravel I added it too as I worked on track ballasting. Ballast is a mixture of fine and medium grade grey, brown, and black ballast gravels from Woodland Scenics. 


I'm going to have to work on the colour a little with thin acrylics to bring it in line with actual gravel in the community garden shown in the above photo. Anyone watching me take photos like this one must wonder about the old lunatic seemingly taking pictures of his shoes, but, hey, one must do seemingly crazy things at times for one's art :-)


On a recent walk I noticed a solar panel had been installed on the roof of the shed. It was added sometime after I made this post about the shed through the seasons. I added one to my little shed using a piece of black construction paper. There's also a wire that runs from the panel, inside through a hole at the top of the other end wall, but I left that off as it would complicate the removable roof I have on the model.


I like to keep assessing the overall look of the layout as I progress. In the above photo I think the shed is a little too close to the path. I plan to move it back, as close to the track as I can so that there's more breathing room between the red flower pots and the path. I'll have to re-drill the hole for the shed's light to make the move, but that's no big deal.

The community garden has a few trees scattered here and there. One is going to be represented on the layout; likely this one. It'll be planted by the re-charging spur for the electric loco, providing shade for the loco while it recharges.

Spot the Change

Left: Stub dead ends | Right: Stub suggestively leads to somewhere else.

After yesterday's post about adding road inserts to suggest a connection to a streetcar system in the wider world I got to thinking about the siding. The more I looked at it the more I thought it should extend to the edge of the layout to suggest it too connects to something in the wider world and shouldn't just be a stub.

Luckily I had a scrap of track left over and I used it to cut an extension. Yeah, I know, it's a small change, but it was one of those things that wasn't going to leave my mind until I did something about it. So I did and it did.

Adding the bounding streets

Suggestions of roads and sidewalks bounding the community garden were added to two corners.
The road+sidewalk insets were built up from scraps of styrene.

I like my layouts to incorporate suggestions of a wider world beyond their boundaries. On the Loonar Module it was a spur that went to the shore, the Centennial Experimental Farm had the loop of track that went through the farm connect to a streetcar line on the main road, and on the Mount Lowe layout there was a road to a parking lot that lead back to the main mountain road.

Slices of foam were cut from the base to accept the road+sidewalk insets.

On this layout I've added little pieces of the two actual roads that bound the community garden. The job of the train is to move people and things from these stops to garden plots.

The road+sidewalk insets are a maximum of 5mm thick.
Painting and weathering will be revisited once more scenery is in place.

Yes, those rails embedded in the road are supposed to be for streetcars. No, there are no streetcars servicing the real community garden. This is all wishful thinking on my part :-)

The Community Garden Shed on Model Railway Quest


Check out the entries to the 'Back to Basics Model Railway Challenge'. You may recall I was inspired to give it a go and build a model of the Community Garden shed in response. That shed makes an appearance at around the 7:13 mark. There're lots of interesting contributions in the video, and it looks like the challenge was well received.

Community Garden Shed, Take 2: Lowe Tech Bricolage

After sitting back and thinking about the community garden shed model I built inspired by the Back to Basics Challenge, I decided I really wanted to try and make front doors that open. I thought it would give the shed more life.


And while I was at it I also thought I should just go full tilt and build a new shed the way I normally would: making use of whatever was in my spares boxes regardless of whether or not I was using beginner friendly materials.

For the walls I used a piece of 4-ply, 500  series Strathmore bristol board that was left over from the repurposed firehouse project.


Although I laid out the walls in a continuous strip, I cut out individual pieces for creating the structure instead of folding the strip into a box.


Siding was simulated by scribing vertical lines into the bristol board.


The trim overlays were drawn on a 3x5 index card as they were for the first model.


Unlike the first model I attached strips of transfer tape to the back of the card so the trim overlays would be self-adhesive. They wouldn't need to be glued on.


As I always say, put a new blade in your knife before cutting. It's especially important when cutting out the fiddly trim overlays.


With the transfer tape backing, it's no fuss, no muss attaching the trim to the door blanks. But, it's important to get the alignment right the first time because that tape bonds instantly and is a real %^&##$^ to peel off in case of a mistake.


Checking the doors' fit. It turns out it was a little too tight and I had to sand their edges a little when it came time to install the hinges so they'd open and close without too much effort.


Jumping ahead a little because I got so caught up in construction I forgot to take photos at this point in the process :-( I dug up a scrap of 'thin' sheet balsa and sliced off 2x4s for paneling the interior. I also did some scrounging to find some garden tools in my scrap box. The interior is painted with Tamiya XF-57 Buff. 


The roof is also made from bristol board. The ridges and peak cap are from 3x5 card, held in place with transfer tape.


Trusses were cut from bristol board to give the roof its shape. They're stuck down with transfer tape. I added trusses because I thought I'd make the roof removable. The fit isn't bad, but not perfect. I may go ahead and stick it in place with some glue, but for now I'll leave it removable.

Painting in progress

Ok, around about this point I started to paint the pieces. And around about this point progress on the project stalled out. I got it in my mind to go out and buy some Vallejo Model Color paint at a nearby hobby store that I colour matched to the prototype. Well, insane gas prices and winter weather that just wouldn't quit encouraged me to delay my shopping trip for days. I finally gave up and went back to the workshop to look in more detail at the colours I had on hand. Instead of relying on the bottles' coloured labels I opened them up, mixed them, and then did some test painting to properly assess the colours, which is what I should have done for the first model.

Bingo, I had some that were fairly close to the prototype, so I used them and saved a trip and some money. The walls and roof are painted with several coats of Revell Aqua Color 36162 Mossy Green with a few washes of Tamiya XF-5 Flat Green to give some colour variation in the surfaces. The off-white trim is a mix of Vallejo Model Color 70.919 Cool White with a very small amount of Vallejo Model Color 70.917 Beige. 

And then there's red:


I painted the space shuttle engine nozzles I used for the flower pots with Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red. Well, let me clarify, I painted them with what was left over after I spilt the new bottle I had on the floor :-( Luckily, the deluge missed my pants. But not my shoes :-( The workshop floor is painted red, so no problem there, but my foot warmer rug got splashed. Argh.

Once the flat red had dried - the flat red on the flower pots that is - a thin wash of Tamiya X-7 Red was applied to give them a little shine.


I wanted an interior light, and following my philosophy of scrounging my spares boxes for parts I finally found a light that would fit. It's a Model Power incandescent streetlight cut from its support structure. I glued it to the trusses so that it pointed towards the back wall to light the tools and be a bit subdued.


There it is, lit up with a 9v battery. I love the incandescent glow. It's something that's hard to replicate with LEDs.

Ok, now the elephant in the room and the reason for this model: the opening doors.

The security window screens are scraps of very fine mesh I had in a spares box.

The prototype looks like it uses strap hinges on the doors. After some thought, and rummaging through my spares boxes, I decided to try using the thinnest brass shim stock I had on hand to cut out straps to use as hinges.


The brass 'hinges' were attached to the front wall with dabs of superglue.

And now for the truth telling part: they work, but not that well. When I closed the doors after taking some beauty shots of the model, half of the hinges popped free from the frame. I think the problem is the doors are still sitting too tight in the frame. They need more clearance, more free-play, so that no force or fiddling is required to open them. I'll likely need to remove the doors, sand their edges, and then remount them. Live and learn.


Well, there you have it. A shed from the spares boxes and junk drawers of the workshop. 

It's good to have the first piece of the new layout done. I'm starting to see how this micro will develop. Stay tuned!
