Putting the 'S' in the Superior Bakery

While I was replanting the big tree the layout was positioned so that I could see the melted Superior Bakery sitting on the shelf at the other end of the workshop. I guess repeated viewing caused something subliminal to happen because the more I looked at the bakery the more I thought it might make a decent S-scale building. I placed a 6' tall S-scale figure beside the door opening, and yeah, it looked like the size wasn't bad. I'd need to build new doors to replace the kit's HO ones, but that's relatively easy. No, it isn't going to appear on the Mt. Lowe layout, but it's got my brain going.

You may recall that back in March I was lucky enough to buy a Revell Superior Bakery kit at the model railway swap meet. The kit also contained a bonus: the leftovers of another Superior Bakery kit that had met an ignominious end by fire, or maybe firecrackers :-)  

I guess I should have just added the salvageable parts to my stash, but I rather liked the way they looked and decided to glue them together as-is. The only new parts I created were a floor made from a piece of 0.060" thick sheet styrene and a styrene brace made from strip stock for the back wall. None of the surviving parts have been painted or changed from the way I found them in the box. I may have invented a new form of "box stock" construction :-)

Mysterious bag of parts

Yesterday after I was done rummaging through the Superior Bakery, checking to see if all the parts were present, I found I couldn't get the lid back on the box. It seemed this bag of parts was preventing the lid from properly seating. All the parts were present, so I wasn't sure what the bag of stuff was. I didn't want to fiddle anymore with the box, so I left it with the lid askew and made some coffee. 

Today I went and opened up that bag.

The bag contained the remaining parts from a Superior Bakery that seems to have experienced some sort of tragic fire related accident. A hot-knife based kitbashing gone wrong? A lit pipe that got too close to the kit? Stray cigarette ash? Children renovating the model with firecrackers? Who knows. At least the box does contain a complete, unblemished Superior Bakery inside. I'll consider those 'extra' parts a bonus and ask no further questions about the horrible fate that befell them.

A Superior haul

I dropped by the OVAR swap meet today with John and Garet. It was a big event, well attended by venders, swappers, and buyers. I was quite surprised to see these classic Revell kits, the Engine House and its derivative, the Superior Bakery. They only cost $10 CDN (7.26 USD; 5.92 GBP) each, so this was a fantastic bargain. They appear to be complete including instructions and decals, and the boxes are in good shape too. I can see a summertime series about building these classics as I did many moons ago with their cousin the Weekly Herald. Stay tuned!

Superior Bakery Blues

While we're on the subject of wall colours, check out the serious blue of the Weekly Herald's cousin, the Superior Bakery. I do like to paint walls to make them seem less like plastic, but with these the colour is so striking that I'd just tone them down a little and leave them as is. 

This looks like an original Revell boxing, and it appears to be in very good condition.
