King car

Last week I was in Toronto and had a chance to see the King St. streetcars in action. As I reported a while back, automobiles have more or less been banned from King St, so streetcar travel won't be hindered. One night, sitting in a restaurant with a view of the street, I can confirm that streetcars zoomed by - east and west - every 5 minutes or so. Anecdotal evidence of course, but that seemed like prompt service.

  1. Having been down to San Francisco back in November, I can testify to how frequently a PCC or other vintage streetcar rumbles by on Market Street. Having driven on Market, following such a vehicle down the street, surrounded by bicycles, pedestrians and other automobiles, I can also testify to what a nightmare it is to dry and drive it! I wish they'd ban autos from that street! It would make getting around SF a much more enjoyable experience. Drive in, park somewhere and use public transportation. It is far more pleasant. Eventually cities will catch on, as will folks who visit there.

    1. I'm not sure if the King St. restriction is a temporary trial or a permanent thing. I know with drivers I spoke to it was an irritation - but I guess that was inevitable.

One day I hope I can visit SF and ride a PCC again - I hear they have one in ancient TTC colours.
