Was E. L. Moore's VW pickup a Husky toy?

Left: VW pickups at Bunn's Feed & Seed | Right: 1965 VW pickup made by Husky Toys

I've been doing some looking around to see if I can identify the VW pickup diecast toy that E. L. Moore used in many of his photographs. I'm wondering if it's an item from Husky Toys. It's possible, but it doesn't quite match. The search continues.

  1. The wheels make me think it's old Lesney Matchbox but I can't find the casting. Their bus and delivery van are quite similar to this.

    1. It could be, but I couldn't find a similar Lesney. I've bought one from eBay for detailed comparison and conversion.

  2. Looks like Moore added a panel to cover the hole left from removing the truss structure. That's the only difference I can see, but I'm no expert.

    1. I think so too. I just bought one on eBay and I'll see for myself. I'll do a conversion to ELM style :-)

  3. I found it: it was a Husky, like you thought. https://www.ebay.com/itm/373666134320 I couldn't see ELM cutting through that metal diecast body and doing that much modification. It would've required soldering and other things he generally didn't like to do.

    1. That is the type I bought (but for somewhat less at $7.50US for a very scratched up one and no display packaging). I just got home and the package was waiting for me. I need to get some scissors, open it up, and have a look. I think all he might have done was pry out scaffolding and stick a piece of balsa over the opening. I'll post an update once I've had a look.
