My first attempt at digitally replacing a background with a photograph. I gave this a try because I realized the lack of trees in the distance was giving me a problem. More practice, more practice.
That first pic is great, the 2nd nearly so. On the 2nd, I struggle to see the distant shoreline which could be rendered in a medium-light gray against the near-grey sky. Further trees can be a grey-blue forest, indicating distance and solidity. Closeup trees can be see through but most distant forests are more of a solid mass. Your first pic background photo is mostly good but it's a little jarring that it's flat and your hill starts only on your modelwork. The colors match but the topography almost doesn't.
Thanks! The second photo wasn't planned. I saw the scene out of the corner of my eye when I was putting things away. I hadn't looked at the scene from that angle before and found it interesting. I took a couple of quick shots and then continued with packing up. It turns out the background for the first image was shot in the area of the model's 'prototype'. These days the derecho and tornado have changed large swaths of the landscape and now we're seeing even more areas of density surrounded by thinned out and devastated areas. But, you're right, I need to work on transitions and such - learning is part of the fun.

Thinking about this a little more. The background trees seem too far away, Their tops should at least peek above the railway's rock cut. Hmm.
