Useful hint: Hold a mirror up to view the layout at scale eye level. We get used to seeing things the normal way, but a mirror 1. focuses in a cropped area and 2. shows you a different view (albeit mirror image) that allows a fresh perspective. I remember drawing a portrait of someone head on... holding it up to a mirror and discovering I drew him with googly eyes. You'll see a startling difference in your layout, too, when you use this technique.
