Tunnelling


Once the sub-structures for the tunnel portals were installed I thought I should go ahead and build the tunnels so I could move on to forming the mountains. I thought it would be more complicated if I roughed out the mountains first before adding the tunnels, so it was tunnelling first, mountains second.


I used scrap material from around the workshop for building the tunnels. I wasn't much concerned about the detail in them so scrap material was sufficient. My only concerns for inside the tunnels were that they appeared dark and dank, had just a little detailing to withstand a casual glance inside, and they directed viewing straight through the portals and didn't allow for all the unfinished foam inside the mountains to be seen. 

Side walls were built up from foam board with glued on sheet styrene embossed with blocks. Cell-U-Clay was used to fill gaps in joints between walls. Some black ballast and sand was glued to the roadbed to provide a little texture. Everything inside was painted black.


Semi-circular tunnel roofs were formed from black mat board. Joints between the roofs and the portals and side walls were covered up with aluminum foil that was painted black on one side. When the tunnel structure was finished it was painted with black acrylics on its outer surface. 


Does it look like the real thing on the inside? Well, not quite, but it does capture some of the foreboding :-)

Casting Call

Collection of latex rock molds so far

I've been busy making rock molds.

Flat ones and 3D ones. 

Several types for several scenes. 

Flat ones for sheer cliff faces. 

Chunky ones for ledges and outcroppings. 

And extras in case I bungle the casting process.

In the summer of 1977 I spent some time learning how to make rock molds from latex and casting rock scenery in plaster.

The method I used was taken from Bob Hayden and Dave Frary's two-part article, Casting rocks from plaster, that appeared in the Dec '74 and Jan '75 issues of Railroad Model Craftsman. The first part deals with making latex models from rocks, and the second is about using the molds to cast plaster rock formations and arranging them on your layout.

The Jan '75 issue also had the first instalment of John Olson's Stop Gap Falls series. It made quite an impression on me and resurfaced in my mind when I started to work on my two modules in 1977. They don't have the drama of Olson's, but they were to be representative of somewhere in northern Ontario, not the Colorado Rockies.

Back in the 70s I followed Hayden and Frary's advice on where to make molds:

"This [JDL: making a latex mold of a rock] can be done either on location in the great out-of-doors, or on your work bench using a chunk of rock hauled in from the boonies. All things considered, bringing a five or six pound rock indoors is the better option ..."

This time around though I figured I'd follow John Olson's:

"I've made many [JDL: rock molds that is] in the field, working on rock faces that were far too large to attempt to take home. Rock mold expeditions make fun family outings. Besides, you'll ensure that your molds are like no one else's - unless they happen to discover the exact same rock you did, and that's highly unlikely!"

The latex came in a small jar from the local art supply. The procedure is pretty standard: brush on 4 or 5 coats (let completely dry between applications) on a clean rock surface, then apply a layer of medical gauze with latex brushed over it, and when dry apply 3 to 5 more coats of latex depending on the thickness that has built up. After everything is dry, carefully peel the molds from the rock. Go slow and easy and they won't tear. On a nice, sunny summer day the whole job to make 6 molds takes from just after breakfast to just before dinner. There are many places on the internet that explain all the details for making rock molds, but this is the gist of it.

Strictly speaking, authenticity-wise, I should have flown to California, hiked up the San Gabriel Mountains, and made some molds near the Mt. Lowe Railway roadbed. Even though I'd love to do that, it wasn't an option, so I looked around for some suitable stand-ins here in Ontario.

One problem with making molds in the field is that if you run out of latex you're done. I found some rather interesting 3D rock shapes while working on those sheer face molds, but I didn't have enough latex on hand to make more molds than those already in process. That'll be for another outing.

The Haunts of George Sprott


I finally got around to buying a copy of Seth's book, George Sprott 1894-1975. I don't know why I put it off for so long given how much I enjoyed Clyde Fans. And I can't believe it's been four years since I bought Clyde Fans - the pandemic temporal distortion field at work no doubt.

Seth has an uncanny ability to capture a feeling of how Ontario and many of its citizens were in the second half of the 20th century even though his graphic novels are full of send ups, caricatures, and wild extrapolations. But, maybe they are the reason his work hits the mark.

I'm hopelessly biased and seem to subconsciously look for connections to model buildings - and E. L. Moore if I hear the gong :-) - in anything I'm reading. It turns out there is a strong connection in George Sprott.

To tell Sprott's story the book has a few two-page spreads like the one shown above where a model of a building is presented on one page, and a cartoon story about it and its relation to Sprott is presented on the other. I've discussed before Seth's sideline of creating a city of model buildings - called 'Dominion' -  like the Melody Grill shown above, but I think this is the first time I've seen those models directly woven into a graphic story. For me this adds an interesting dimension to the book, and I recommend that anyone interested in making model buildings read it if you think your models should be more than generic props. While you're at it, consider comparing Seth's approach to storytelling with Paul Michael Smith's in his book, Elgin Park, which also makes use of model buildings.

Well, whether you buy it for the excellent graphic novella, or the interesting approach to integrating model buildings and storytelling, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

A quartet of tunnel portals

I glued up four tunnel ports from 0.040" thick styrene and scraps of 1" thick pink foam. They're shaped to resemble the Mueller Tunnel portal and sized to accommodate the Thaddeus Lowe trolley. These are portal substructures and not the finished items. Once the scenery is well along I'll add decorative facades to each of these to make them appear more like the real thing.


The portal openings were sized to fit the trolley and not much more. This is one of the reasons I thought it was important to build the vehicle that would run around this layout first instead of later when the scenery was in place.


The portals have been arranged so that I can build a mountain ridge from Inspiration Point to the Circular Bridge. It's going to be tricky, but I think it's doable. 

Hmmmm, I think I need to buy some more foam.

Exploring the heights

I've been spending some spare moments building out the foam support structure of Inspiration Point. I've added a narrow and steep hiking trail that starts at the trolley stub and switches back a few times on its way to the lookout. Although the path isn't prototypical I wanted one that was a bit treacherous and scary, even if I had to exaggerate it a little. This part of the mountain is glued up from scraps of foam I've kept around for just such a purpose.

While looking for a post this morning I accidentally pulled up this one from just about 2 years ago. I'd forgotten about it, but after re-reading the list I realized that this layout more or less captures many of the points called out in the post. Spooky.

A little bit of aura

I thought, well, since I'm reading Olson's and Furlow's books I need to find a copy of Westcott's book about John Allen if I'm to have any chance of properly understanding what was going on with O and F. After a long search I was able to find a good copy at a reasonable price. It arrived today.

There are no marks on my copy other than this name and date, "Duane Herbert 1981", penciled in on the front page in a neat, small script. As I was casually thumbing through the pages after taking the book from the shipping envelope out fell this note:


According to Byung-Chul Han and Walter Benjamin this is a little bit of the book's aura dropping in my lap. Believe me, when I saw this note, the specialness of this copy increased a great deal in my estimation.

The book was published in 1981 so I suspect Mr. Herbert bought it quite soon after it was released given his front page annotation. I have no idea when he loaned it to his father, or if his father read it or enjoyed it.

Yes, the aura does add another dimension to the book. I hope the text has some surprises in store.

Starting to add terrain

I've started to build out the terrain on the Mt. Lowe micro. The lobe shown in the photo's lower right is the location of the fictional stop where the fictional secret backroad from the Angeles Crest Scenic Byway meets the Mt. Lowe trolley. These days I'm spending way too much time working on the grades at the track crossing to make sure my Porsche doesn't scrape bottom when I pull into the parking lot :-)

In the photo's upper right I'm starting to use foam to sketch in the mountain near the circular bridge. I've also added some reinforcement to where the ends of the circular bridge will be mounted.

Over on the photo's upper left, that foam column is being used to help me visualize the relationship between the height at inspiration point to that at the circular bridge area. It's early days, so all this is still pretty 'sketchy'.

After thinking about scenery for awhile I realized I need to establish the size and position of the central tunnel portals so I can get the flow of scenery from one lobe to another as seamless as possible. The Mt. Lowe railway didn't have tunnels, but I did walk through the Mueller Tunnel on my way to a Mt. Lowe hiking trail. My plan is to base my tunnel portals on the Mueller Tunnel. I'll mockup something with foam and sheet styrene. I should have an update on that in a future post.

No, they're actually latex rock molds!

Those aren't what you think they are, they're my first attempt in about 50 years to make latex rock molds. I started with a couple of flat surface molds as I thought they'd be easiest. They'll be used to add texture to some flat foam surfaces. 

The last time I made latex rock molds was around 1975 or so in my parents' backyard. It's like riding a bicycle, one never forgets :-) I'll do a post on making molds sometime in the future.

Well, I've made a lot of forward looking statements in this post. I better go and do some work so I don't have to eat my words.

Putting the 'S' in the Superior Bakery

While I was replanting the big tree the layout was positioned so that I could see the melted Superior Bakery sitting on the shelf at the other end of the workshop. I guess repeated viewing caused something subliminal to happen because the more I looked at the bakery the more I thought it might make a decent S-scale building. I placed a 6' tall S-scale figure beside the door opening, and yeah, it looked like the size wasn't bad. I'd need to build new doors to replace the kit's HO ones, but that's relatively easy. No, it isn't going to appear on the Mt. Lowe layout, but it's got my brain going.

Replanting a mighty tree

Back in January I finished and planted the large tree for the front of the Centennial Experimental Farm layout.

Paul noted the tree seemed too large and the bifurcation was too high off the ground. At the time I was obsessed with how big the tree was, so I didn't do anything. But, the comment kept rattling around in the back of my mind. 

As I was working on the Mt. Lowe layout I moved the Centennial Farm layout to a corner of the workshop to give me some extra elbow room. The farm was never out of sight, and I could see that tree in all its extra tall glory every time I worked on the Mt. Lowe track.

That constant visual reminder - nagging? :-) - convinced me that once I got the Mt. Lowe track functioning I'd reposition the tree.


And so I did. 


This change seems to have made a big difference in my opinion of the layout. It looks more balanced. Yeah, I still need to work on my technique for shaping and colouring bark; however, the overall scene is better.

Mountain in a Trunk


Ok, well, it's the Mt. Lowe micro-layout structure in the cargo area of a Honda CR-V. Transporting it shouldn't be a problem.
